Purpose Driven Life daily devotional, "Will God Help Me?"
Perhaps the resistance you and I exhibit when we’re faced with a faith-step is because we seriously doubt God will look out for our best interests – “Yes, I believe God can work this out, but will he?”
And this often lapses into the speech of behavior that says, “I know I can work this out, but I’m not sure God will – at least I’m not sure he will do it the way I want to see it done.”
The incredible thing is this: God patiently understands your hesitancy, so he made the first move toward establishing a loving, trusting relationship with you. He didn't wait until you could be trusted to receive his love, and he doesn’t insist you become trustworthy before he trusts you with precious gifts. (Romans 5:6-8)
This means that by taking small steps of faith, obeying God in small ways, “We find ourselves standing where we always hoped we might stand – out in the wide open spaces of God's grace and glory, standing tall and shouting our praise.” (Romans 5:2 MSG)

wow.
so often we're Peter, sinking below the water, so unfaithful and untrusting that we underestimate what god can do, we don't know that we could have walked, we could have gotten there.
reminds me of that one really old acoustic relient k song, anna, help me out here.
*nods* and i say that so often, i know God CAN, no one's doubting that- i just tend to doubt that he WILL.
Yeah, I was totally thinking about that yesterday and today! It's like, "God, I know You're all-powerful, and of course You CAN do this, but, maybe, please, if You might possibly consider, if it's in Your will....will you?"
and HELLO!!!! the Bible says to pray with EXPECTATION. we can't just send our prayers up knowing that He can, but expecting that He will (if it's in His will).
and who am I to talk? I'm so bad at this...yes, since we're all just confessing our big faults to each other now, this is one of the big things that I hate about myself. I mean, come one, mustard seeds aren't that big, so I'm wondering, if I don't even have that much faith that He will, then what am I left with?
Don't you love not having to worry about anything? If it's good for you it will happen! (Romans 8:28) I love it.
yeah, but what if it's not good for you? and you just don't know it?
Exactly! See that's why God is so much better than the genie-in-the-bottle or wishing ring in all the fairy tales. Because HE knows if it is good for you and if it's not He won't do it.
Amen to that. We could not have a better Father!
yes, i agree, but doesn't that irradicate the point of praying with expectation? we can't expect things if God isn't necessairly going to give it to us.
that's why i found this devotional interesting.
yeah...I've really been struggling with praying with expectation lately. like, I don't know what God's will is, so I'm always praying for what I want "if it's in Your will."
so I guess we have to spend more time with Him to know His mind and His will, and then we too will know what it best for us in His eyes.
Yeah that's the paradox of prayer... I think Verya's right. There's no point in expecting to receive something you know God will not give to you because it's bad; but you can be all the more expectant that you will receive everything that really is good for you.
You know what I think is interesting? Even Jesus prayed for something He basically knew He would not get; on the night before His crucifixion. But He said "Not My will but Yours be done."
