Then you begin to make it better
Yesterday in the sermon at Emmanuel the pastor's third point was that Christ didn't just come to save us, he came to make us holy. This kind of startled me... I understand, of course, that Christ wants us to be holy and that he calls us to be perfect as he is perfect, but I'd never thought of this as the actual reason he died for us. If he died to make us holy, then why are we still fallen men?

and women, lol.
Let's see. My take on it is this: We'll never be truly holy until we're in heaven with Christ, but we can't be there unless we've accepted what Christ did for us. So he died so we could be with Him, and be holy like Him. Which to me always meant, essentially, that He came to save us, because if we died without Him we wouldn't be with Him. That's why we all need to be "saved."
Ah, that does make since. So you're saying...
We won't be holy till heaven.
He died so we could go to heaven.
Therefore, he died so we could be holy?
Well, you could also say
We won't be robed in white till heaven.
He died so we could go to heaven.
Therefore, he died so we could be robbed in white.
I just don't see it as the REASON he died. He died to save us from hell... not to make us good in this life. Being good in this life is the small service we can give him to show our obedience and submission to him, even though we do fail daily.
and women, yes. lol.
yeah, because it seemed like everyone could "try" to be good before jesus came, too.
maybe what pastor was trying to say was that jesus' death covers up our sin, making us holy? but that isn't really what i remember.
yeah, exactly.
no, cuz this was in his application- we need to work to make ourselves holy because he died so we could be holy. interesting logic.
I never thought of that . . . your right Emily, it is rather startling.
Well, as we were saying, was he saying we need to be holy here, or we can't be holy until heaven?
ok, so I'm thinking like this: Jesus died why? pastor says to make us holy, not to save us? but is he viewing them kind of as the same thing? after all, if Jesus died to save us from Hell, we will become holy. If Jesus died to make us holy, He is essentially saving us because we will be with Him. Then there is being as holy and christ-like as we can in this life, but we can't truly be holy until we reach heaven. so I think ultimately, Jesus died both to save us and make us holy, if you look at them as going together.
so I guess it depends on how you view being holy. I'd have to agree, Jesus didn't die to get our gratitude so we would be holy in our short time on earth. He died so we could be with Him forever, and as part of that we will be truly holy, because if we have sin we can't be in heaven. so there again, to be saved we must be made holy by Him.
huh. i wish i had heard the sermon. this could be all wrong.
no, good thoughts Verya- but the point was that Jesus died to make us holy IN THIS LIFE. That's what confused me. But yes, it's just a thought, I was just curious if I was the only one surprised by that.
